Welcome to Grade Three!

My name is Mrs. Castellani and I teach third grade. I have been a teacher for 24 years in the Belleville School System. I taught many grades in both School 7 and School 5.  I am lucky to be part of the School 5 family!

I would like to share a little bit about my hands-on teaching background. I began by completing my internship or "student teaching" in a Grade 4 classroom in Paterson, NJ, and the second half of my internship was also in Grade 4, but in Belleville, School 7. The following year, I substitute taught all grades in K-6  in each of the Belleville schools for about 7 months and the last 3 months I was hired as a maternity leave replacement at School 7 where I took over for a 5th grade Gifted & Talented Teacher. I was then hired full-time starting September of 1996 at School 7.

My first year teaching I taught Grade 1. My second - fifth year teaching I taught Grade 2. My sixth- ninth year teaching, I taught Grade 5. During that time I had my first child and stayed home for about 10 months to embrace that special time with her.  I decided to make a big leap and switch to the younger ones and came on over to School 5 and became the Kindergarten Teacher, where I stayed put for 11 years.  It was then time, for me to make my last change and asked to be placed in Grade 3, when the opportunity presented itself.  This is my 5th year teaching Grade 3! This by far,  is the my favorite grade that I have ever had the pleasure of teaching!

The amount of experience I have had in the many grade levels and my extensive knowledge with all areas of curriculum have helped me grow through the years which have made me an even better teacher.  I can say this with confidence. I keep up-to-date-with the latest teaching practices for both virtual and in-person learning.  This summer, I have taken  daily webinars to enhance your children's experience for this upcoming school year and I did this because I WANTED to, not because I HAD to. I love learning!  I want your children to LOVE learning and they will!

My Degrees:
I have a dual BA in Elementary Education (Grade K-6) and in Sociology and a MA+32 in many areas of Education to name a few: (the ELL child, Special Needs, G&T, Behavior Management, Multiple Intelligences,)

Home:
I am married for 18 years and am a mother of two teenage daughters. Yikes! lol
I grew up in Nutley and after meeting my husband, got married and moved  and settled in the town of Basking Ridge.  My eldest is currently a Junior in High School and my youngest,  is in 8th grade. Last summer we added a new "member" to our family, a Malti-poo, named Lexi.  What a joy!!

Please know, I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to teach your children! I value them and hold their education in the highest regards. I realize that you send me your most precious gift each and everyday ~ your child.  I hope this will be the case, as we are still on such unchartered waters with this pandemic.  Either way, I will be there for them whether in person, at school or on the computer, from home.  I will give students feedback daily and be in constant communication with you, as well.

It is my goal to meet the individual needs of each student so that they can reach the highest level of their potential. I believe in creating an environment that is safe and conducive to learning where students are encouraged to take risks and work independently to build self-confidence.  I listen closely, make many observations formally and informally, and then guide them; teach them to make the right decisions, or work on a specific skill to be successful.  I spend many, many  hours after school and before school working on lesson-planning.

"Human Nature is not a machine to be built after a model and set to do the work prescribed for it, but a tree, which requires to grow and develop itself on all sides."
By John Stuart Mill

Please take care of yourselves, stay healthy, and I look forward to a productive 2020-21 school year!

At this time there are no supply lists.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Castellani
