Welcome to Ms. Soehngen's Third Grade

I am so excited to be teaching your child this year! As you know, your child's subjects are departmentalized this year between three different teachers-Mrs. Castellani, Mr. Pucci, and myself. I will be teaching ELA to 3A and 3B and social studies to my homeroom (3B). Reading has been my passion since I was a small child. I can thank my Mom for that! She has been reading to me since day 1, and she used to give me books for every holiday. I have since passed that tradition to the little ones in my family. I love reading so much that I even furthered my education in it. I have a Masters Degree as well as being certified in the state of New Jersey as a Reading Specialist.  I have been teaching 3rd grade in the Belleville School System for the past 17 years.  Before that, I taught 2nd grade in a private school.
In previous grades, your child was learning to read. In the third grade, your child is reading to learn. Third graders are still building decoding and fluency skills, but also learning to go deeper into the meaning of what they read. Another huge step forward: expect your child to tackle new and challenging books, poetry, and articles! This will be my third year working with our new reading series, Wonders by Mc Graw Hill.  I absolutely LOVE all that it has to offer for the children.
Your child will be DRA tested three times a year. The DRA is the Developmental Reading Assessment. It is a formative reading assessment in which I am able to systemically observe, record, and evaluate changes in your child's reading performance. A student's DRA level (independent reading level) reflects the student's oral reading fluency (95% accuracy) and comprehension (90%) at independent performance levels. I am able to zero in on strengths and weaknesses in different area's of your child's reading ability using this assessment and working in small groups.
Your child's grade will be composed of various reading skills, guided reading group work, listening comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, writing, and projects.
Please see link below to access ordering books online through our class website for Scholastic Reading Club using the code.  Also, I provided a quick and easy way to determine if your child is reading books on their level by using the Scholastic Book Wizard link below.
I am so excited to see your child's growth this year. There is nothing more rewarding in my career than seeing your child succeed. So here's to another fantastic school year!
Please be sure to email me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns throughout the year.
