Welcome to ESL/ELL (English as Second Language/ English Language Learner)! My name is Sophia Piano and this is my 16th year teaching in the Belleville School District. I am very excited to be a part of the School Five Family and I look forward to a successful year!
Let me start by sharing some information about myself. I graduated from UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. After college, my love for travel and interest in different cultures took me to Japan, where I taught English in the Japanese school system for two years. My amazing experience in Japan reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in education, one specializing in second language acquisition. I obtained a Master of Education Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, English as a Second Language, at George Mason University in Virginia. I have been teaching English Language Learners ever since.
ESL/ELL is an English language developmental program designed to raise the student's level of English proficiency in four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The aim of this program is to have ELLs acquire the necessary academic language skills to achieve at their highest potential so they may integrate into the mainstream class with success.
